Greater Boston Principal Residency Network

The Commitments of Aspiring and Mentor Principals

Each Aspiring Principal (AP) works under the guidance, and with the support, of a Mentoring Principal (MP), within the context of authentic leadership. The MP helps to direct the AP’s reading and research, and challenges the AP to capitalize on her leadership experiences through ongoing, active reflection. Aspiring Principals Presentation to fellow aspiring principalsdevelop a site-based learning plan that assists the candidate in mastering the required program competencies, through the intensive residency experience and a diverse set of learning experiences focused on problems and project-based learning, case studies, shadowing, journaling, research, data analysis, and public engagement. In addition, each AP develops and implements projects that contribute to advancing the school’s restructuring or improvement agenda. As part of the residency, AP’s must read and write regularly and incorporate research into project work. Both MP’s and AP’s must commit to regular participation in the monthly Network meetings, the twice-yearly “Intensives,” and the two Summer Institutes.

To document this work, each AP develops an extensive portfolio, demonstrating the connection between project work and leadership growth. Twice yearly, AP’s exhibit their work to an assessment panel of fellow AP’s, MP’s, and, on occasion, representatives from the university community and other interested onlookers. In addition, colleagues in the school community can be asked to assist in evaluation by providing feedback on the work of participating AP’s. Aspiring Principals earn MA. state principal certification, a certificate of graduate credit at Northeastern University, and a PRN diploma upon program completion.
