Menino, union forge deal for new Hub pilot schools

By Marie Szaniszlo
Thursday, February 16, 2006

Mayor Thomas M. Menino yesterday reached an agreement with public school officials and the Boston Teachers Union that will enable the creation of at least seven new pilot schools in the city by September 2008, one of which may be governed by the union.

The agreement would cap the number of unpaid teacher work hours required in pilot schools at 105 in the first year, 100 in the second and 95 in the third.

The district would have to pay teachers the hourly rate for up to 50 work hours over the cap.

The individual pilot schools would have to pay for any hours beyond that.

Today, there are 17 pilot schools and two Horace Mann charter schools in Boston, all of which are funded by the city but governed by individual boards.
