Guidelines for Writing a Letter of Commitment to Become a
Pilot Replication District

Following are guidelines to use in writing a letter of commitment to join the CCE Small Schools Network, which includes Pilot replication districts.  This letter should be addressed to the Executive Director of the Center for Collaborative Education.

  1. The letter must be signed by the following people:
    • Superintendent of Schools
    • Teachers Union President
    • School Board Chairperson
  2. The letter should identify the number of small, secondary schools that the district seeks to create over a five-year period, including the following:
    • Grade span for each small school
    • Minimum and maximum number of students in each small school
    • Proposed timeline of roll-out for each school (knowing that this may well change as planning goes on)
    • Assurance that the small schools will be open to all students, and will be representative of the demographics of the district enrollment

  3. The letter should commit the district partnership to the four criteria for the CCE Small Schools Network:
    • Each small school will house no more than 400 students;
    • Each small school will commit to implementing a set of effective small schools practices, based on the CCE Effective Small Schools Practices
    • Each district will embrace the full set of CCE autonomies
    • Each district will commit to an accountability process of school quality reviews for each school every four years
    Please copy these criteria word for word in your commitment letter (e.g., “The _____ Public Schools commits to the following four criteria for the CCE Small Schools Network:”).
  1. The letter should commit the school district and teachers union to have in place an agreement that will guarantee each small school the full set of CCE autonomies prior to funds and services being rendered by CCE.
