Descriptions of Projects and Committees

Competencies and Assessment Committee: This committee of teachers crafted a set of common K-12 competencies that offers multiple ways to demonstrate proficiencies. Network-wide competencies were developed in math and literacy. Committee members collected assessments from schools as well as rubrics and examples of student work..

Special Education Committee: This group advocates for a different model of identifying and servicing students with special needs. Issues: How do you appropriately identify students who need special education services? How do you ensure that Pilots are enrolling a representative number of students with special needs?

Race and Diversity Committee: Pilot School leaders comprise this committee that focuses on race and diversity in the network. A key goal has been to examine issues of equity as they exist among leaders of Pilot Schools. Discussions about race and equity have strengthened collegial relationships and increased people’s capacity to lead similar conversations in their schools.

Fiscal Autonomy Committee: This committee was established to ensure the equal and equitable funding of all Pilot Schools. Another goal is to increase the amount of fiscal autonomy allowed Pilots by expanding the types of costs that are discretionary.

Study Group on Achievement: This group investigates issues of achievement at Pilot Schools by using an individual school’s data to provide a case study. Of particular interest are gaps in achievement due to race, gender, and socio-economic status.

Principal Residency Network: This is a collaborative effort of the Northeastern University School of Education and the Center for Collaborative Education. This program is designed to develop leaders through a field-based practicum that allows these scholar-practitioners to bring research, theory, and practice to bear as they face the challenges of “real schools.”
