Greater Egleston Community High School

The mission of the Greater Egleston Community High School is to create a community of learners who provide responsible local and global leadership and participation.

School Characteristics

  • Pilot school by, in and for the community - working in partnership with ESAC, Inc., offers its facilities, including the computer lab, to family members and community residents until 9 p.m.;
  • Places students into skill levels regardless of age, earned points, or previous school experience;
  • Project ProPEL program supports our pregnant and parenting students through active partnerships with Simmons College, UMass Boston, Bunker Hill Community College, and the Museum of Science which provide us with tutors, mentors, and educational and internship opportunities;
  • In partnership with the Corporation for Business, Work and Learning, offers Diploma Plus, in which students do an internship, take community college courses, and complete projects in order to graduate;
  • Hands-on, interdisciplinary, project-based curriculum;
  • Students’ work assessed with portfolios and exhibitions;
  • Actively participates in the Louis D. Brown Peace Curriculum and works to promote peace; school will construct Peace Garden as our legacy to the Egleston community;
  • Active partnerships with the Egleston Square Coalition;
  • Offers recreation programs in collaboration with the Jamaica Plain Community Centers, and Egleston YMCA;
  • Has a Photographer-in-Residence;
  • Collaborates with community organizations to promote environmental justice;
  • Boston School Committee accepted and approved GECHS’s evaluation and renewed its Pilot School agreement for four years—1999-2003.
