The Achievement of Students of Color
This is an invitation to join a study group
that will:
- look at data and engage in conversations that allow
us to look closely at the achievement of students of color
- determine how the Pilot Network can respond to this
issue in order to interrupt the pattern of poor school performance
- identify what is working in our schools that effectively
and successfully address academic performance and achievement
- review research and writings that provide perspective
and understanding of race, performance and the achievement gap
The study group will meet for 7 sessions;
our first meeting will be held Thursday, December 6, 2001 at the Center
for Collaborative Education

1. Introductions / What brings you to this
study group?
2. Purpose/goals of this study group:
- To look at disaggregated data and engage in conversations
that allow us to look closely at the achievement and the performance
of students of color.
- To determine how the Pilot Network can respond to this
issue in order to interrupt the pattern of poor school performance.
- To identify what is working in our schools that effectively
address academic performance and achievement and what else needs to
happen. What are the conditions that must be met so that students of
color are successful in school?
- To review research and writings that provide perspective
and understanding of race, performance and achievement
- What are leadership and teacher practices (pedagogy)
that lead to success in school
- Other goals
3. What is the difference between achievement
and performance?
4. Sharing our own experiences/stories (personal
or professional) with the achievement of students
of color
5. Ways in which we will accomplish these
goals:
- Use actual data from schools and a process of collaborative
inquiry to interpret and analyze data / to construct an essential question.
- Text-based discussions using articles and excerpts
from relevant literature and writing about the achievement of the students
of color.
- Attend forums/lectures about this topic
