Bigger isn’t always better

by Jennifer Chase, education writer (November 27, 2003)

Massachusetts may launch new, small urban high schools.

The Center for Collaborative Education and Jobs for the Future wrote a proposal, “Creating Schools that Work,” in response to a report identifying traits common to successful urban high schools in the state. Traits include being small and personal, developing a focused curriculum, and promoting supportive cultures in the school and the community.

The Creating Schools that Work policy would consider converting existing large high schools into small ones, which would create more grade 6-12 and 7-12 schools.

A hoped-for result is closing the achievement and racial gap between predominantly low-income students in urban schools and their predominantly middle-class peers in suburban schools.
